Rupee Gets It’s Official Symbol

15 07 2010

The verdict is out – The cabinet has given its nod on the symbol which was selected by a five member panel out of all the entries which had been received in response to the contest organized by the Indian Government to select an official symbol for the Indian Currency – Rupee.

The design submitted by D. Udaya Kumar, an IIT post graduate, is based on the tricolor and “arithmetic equivalence”. While the white space between the two horizontal lines gives the impression of the national flag with the Ashok Chakra, the two bold parallel lines stand for “equals to”, symbolizing balance in the Indian economy, both within and with other economies of the world. The design also makes him eligible for a winning amount of 2.5 Lakh rupees as well as a remarkable recognition of registering his name for someone who has designed the currency symbol in the Indian history books.
